Perennial Cultivation: Prickly Pear Cactus is a Colorado native plant that can be found growing throughout the plains to elevations of 8,000 feet or more in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Plant Prickly Pear Cactus in full sun in well drained sandy soil. Once established it tolerates poor soils and drought conditions extremely well. Its bright yellow flowers  open late spring to early summer, with individual flowers lasting 1 to 2 days. Flowers will ripen to an edible red fruit in fall.

Propagation:
Prickly Pear Cactus plants could be re-located from private property by digging entire plants or taking stem cuttings from second year growth.

It may be easier and less sticky to purchase pre-started plants from your local Garden Center. Space new container grown plants 24" to 36" apart. Prickly Pear Cactus is a slow grower that will take some time to establish.

Potential pests ~ diseases:
Rare. Rabbits may nibble on the plant.
