Standard and Mini Calla
Lily Care Tips
After you've received and hydrated your Calla
Lilies its time to enjoy them. Here's some Calla Lily Care Tips to help you
get the most from your fresh Calla Lily Flowers.
- To get the longest vase life from your Mini or Standard Calla Lilies
try to handle them as little as possible. Avoid handling the flower
heads. If at all possible only hold your Calla Lilies by the stem.
- For optimal vase life change the water in your Calla Lilies every few
days. Re-cut your Calla Lily stems as described in Receiving
Calla Lilies. Always re-cut the stems with a sharp knife. A
dull knife or scissors tends to crush the stem reducing the Calla Lilies
ability to "drink" water.
- If you run out of floral preservative you may substitute three
tablespoons of 7-up or Sprite to the water. Both contain citric acid
which is one of the ingredients in floral preservatives.
Keep your vases
full...
- Always keep the water level in your vases or buckets topped off. Be
sure to never submerge the Calla Lily flowers.
- Never place your Calla Lily flowers in direct sun shine.
- Heat is a Calla Lilies worst enemy. Never place your Calla Lilies near
any heat source such as refrigerators, televisions, appliances or
heating and ventilation ducts.
- Avoid drafty areas.
- Some might think that they can extend the life of their Mini or
Standard Calla Lilies by placing them in the refrigerator. Refrigerators
filled with food produce ethylene gas which will dramatically reduce the
vase life of your Calla Lily.
Arranging Mini or
Standard Calla Lilies...
- When arranging Mini or Standard Calla Lilies always handle the flowers
by the stem.
- When its time to create your bridal or bridesmaid bouquets... keep in
mind that the Calla Lily stems may drip for a while, leaving stains on
dresses or other fabrics. To help prevent dripping, remove your bridal
bouquets from water at least 30 minutes before the ceremony. This will
allow the flowers time to drink some of the water in the stems.
- Carefully dipping the ends of the stems in melted wax will help
"seal" the stems. Placing a cotton ball at the bottom of the
stems and wrapping with fabric also helps to prevent drips.
