Houseplant Cultural information: "Burly Marx" Stromanthe was named after a South American horticulturist that devoted his life to plants. This beautiful Stromanthe looks quite similar to the common green "Prayer" plant, but it's much hardier and easier to grow than the green Maranta.

Place your Burly Marx houseplant in cool filtered light. Early morning or late day direct sunshine will help keep the plant vigorous. East or west windows are a good choice. Direct hot sun will curl and burn the leaves.

Burly Marx prefers to be watered with water that has been set out over night to let chlorine evaporate. If you have an aquarium, used fish tank water is very beneficial. Check your Burly Marx for water weekly keeping the soil slightly moist. Never allow the plant to sit in a drip tray of water as this will cause root rot. Placing your Burly Marx on a pebble tray helps to increase the humidity near the plant. Mist occasionally.

Feed bi-monthly with Peter's Houseplant Special when the plant is actively growing. If the Burly Marx is not growing it won't need any fertilizer.

Propagation is difficult in our dry climate. The only way to propagate a Burly Marx is by dividing the plant. To divide the plant just cut it in half. Repot each half in a quality houseplant potting soil being careful not to plant to deeply. Water thoroughly immediately after repotting. Keep the soil barley moist after dividing.

Common houseplant pests can include: Mealy bug and Aphids.

Burly Marx is available as small starter plants in 3" and 4" pots and you can find them in 6" upright pots and 8" hanging baskets.
