Cut Flower Care: Keep the water in the vase of your Tulips
fresh. Replace the water every 3 days with cold water keeping
the water level near the top of the vase.
Re-cut 1/4" from
the base of each Dutch Tulip stem under water using a sharp
knife
with each water change. Remove any foliage that may become
submerged after re-cutting.
Variety note: The Tulip
family is quite large containing well over 100 varieties. Tulips
can be grown outdoors in your bulb garden or forced in containers
indoors. The pictured Tulips were dry when photographed causing
their stems to bend which will
not totally straighten, but the flower heads will turn up right. Tulip stems
will continue to grow (elongate) after the flower has been
harvested,
which will cause the flower head to rise higher than originally
placed placed in the arrangement.
Tulips are available in a wide selection of solid colors and
bi-colors. Basically there are two types of flower heads...
regular (pictured) and a serrated wavy petal found on Parrot type
Tulips. Tulips are available year round with the best supplies
running from late January to early May. Tulip prices are lowest at
this time of year. During late summer thru winter its not uncommon
for Tulip prices to double from that of early spring.
Add a commercial bulb preservative to the vase that contains your
Tulips with
each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent bacterial
growth, aids in keeping vase water clear, and feeds your flowers insuring a longer vase life. To
make your own cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table sugar to a
quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
