Cut Flower Care: Keep the water in the vase of your Oriental
Stargazer Lily fresh. Replace the water every 3 days with cold
water keeping the water level near the top of the vase. Re-cut
1/2" from the base of each Stargazer stem under water using a
sharp knife with each water change. Remove any foliage
that may become submerged after re-cutting.
Variety note: Stargazers
are highly prized for their beauty. They are equally at home
arranged with other cut flowers or used alone. Oriental Stargazer Lilies
are quite fragrant... almost over powering if the arrangement
consists of only Stargazer Lilies.
Pollen sacks, technically known as anthers, should be removed
from the blossom filaments as soon as the flower opens. Upon
opening it only takes about and hour for an Oriental lilies
anthers to transform themselves into a mass of golden yellow
pollen. Removing the pollen sacks prevents pollen petal staining
of the flowers.
Oriental Lily flowers are quite a bit larger than Asiatic
Lilies. They are available in white, burgundies, pinks, yellows, and several bi-color shades.
Bunches range in length from 24" to just over 36"
depending on variety. Oriental Lilies are sold in 10 stem bunches.
When selecting Oriental Lilies the foliage should be glossy
dark green with no yellowed leaves. Flower buds should be colored
up and just cracking open for longest vase life, or if you need an
immediate show open flowers are just fine.
Lily fans are lucky to have a well known Asiatic and Oriental
Lily grower located right here in Arvada, Colorado. They grow
thousands of bunches of beautiful Lilies each year. Our Floral
Sponsor buys these Colorado grown lilies and has them available in
her shop.
Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or
FloraLife to the vase that contains your Stargazer Lily with each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent
bacterial growth and feeds your Stargazer flowers insuring a longer vase
life.
If you run out of commercial flower preservative you can
make your own fresh cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table sugar to a
quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
