Floral Greens Care: Keep the water in the vase of your Salal
fresh. Replace the water every 3 days with cold water keeping
the water level near the top of the vase.
Re-cut 1/2" from
the base of each Salal stem under water using a sharp knife
with each water change. Remove any foliage that may become
submerged after re-cutting.
Variety note: Pronounced
sah-lall. Salal is primarily used as a cut floral green in
flower arrangements. Its thick wiry stems, make it easy to
insert into arrangements or oasis foam. Salal is available in two
sizes, Salal tip which is about 12" long, and regular Salal
measuring 16" - 20" or more. Salal is sold with 10 stems
or more per bunch. To dry Salal hang bunches upside down in an
area out of direct sunshine. Once dry spray with a fixative.
Common Names Include: Shallon,
Lemon Leaf and Little John.
Salal is not commercially cultivated. Salal is harvested in
mountainous areas. In its natural habitat Salal is a bushy shrub that reaches 4' in height and
5' in width. Late in the spring it flowers with pinkish-white
blossoms that hang downward from its branches.
Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or
FloraLife to the vase that contains your Salal with
each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent bacteria
growth, aids in keeping vase water clear, and feeds your flowers insuring a longer vase life. To
make your own cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table sugar to a
quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
