Cut Flower Care: Keeping the water in the vase of your
Freesia fresh can help extend vase life two or three days. Replace the water every 3rd
day with cold water keeping
the water level near the top of the vase. Re-cut 1/2" from
the base of each Freesia stem under water using a sharp
knife
with each water change. Remove any foliage that may become
submerged after re-cutting to avoid bacterial problems.
Variety note: Freesia is a
small family of very fragrant plants containing only 10 varieties, most of which
are man made hybrids. Freesias are available at your local Floral
Shop in white, yellow, purple, pink, red and several bi-colors in shades of
red, yellow and orange with colored throats. Some varieties
of Freesia are very fragrant.
Freesia is available year round with breaks in supply during
the hot summer months. Freesia is sold in 10 stem bunches that can
vary greatly in length.
Avoid mixing
Narcissus or Daffodils with Freesia as it will shorten its
shelf life.
Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or
FloraLife to the vase that contains your Freesia with
each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent bacterial
growth and feeds your flowers insuring a longer vase life.
To
make your own cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table sugar to a
quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
