Cut Flower Care: Keeping the water in the vase of your Delphinium
fresh can add several days to their vase life. Replace the water every 3 days with cold
water keeping
the water level near the top of the vase. Re-cut 1/2" from
the base of each stem under water using a sharp knife
with each water change. Remove any foliage that may become
submerged after re-cutting to avoid bacterial growth.
Variety note: Delphiniums
are available in two flower types depending on which family they are member
of; the Belladonna or the Elatum groups. The pictured plant is from
the Elatum group. The Elatum group produces a long columnar or
cone shaped spike of flowers. Color selections include:
purple, lavender, pink, yellow and white. Delphinium Elatum is available
year round. Bunches are usually 30" to 36" in length and
sold in 10 stem bunches.
Many varieties of Delphiniums are winter hardy here in Colorado
and can be purchased at your local Garden Center for planting in
your garden.
Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or
FloraLife to the vase that contains your Delphinium with each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent
bacteria growth and provides your fresh cut flowers with
nutrients, insuring a longer vase
life. To make your own cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table
sugar to a quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
