Tropical Cut Flower Care: Keep the
water in the vase of your Bird of Paradise fresh. Replace the water every 3 days with cold
water keeping the water level near the top of the vase. Re-cut
1/2" from the base of each Bird of Paradise stem under water using a
sharp knife with each water change.
Variety note: The
"Bird of Paradise" derived it's name from a past Queen
of England... Queen Charlotte Sophia. She had a home in Strelitzia,
Germany hence it genus name Strelitzia. The last name regiane...
is Latin for "Queen". The meaning of this flower is
Freedom or Magnificence.
Bird of Paradise usually has strong thick stems measuring 30"
to 36" in length. Their flowers occasionally may need a
little help emerging from the protective green sheath. Gently
spread the sheath and carefully pull the flowers out. There are
usually two "Birds" in each sheath. Bird of
Paradise is available year round with an occasional slump in
supply. Strelitzia reginae is sold in 5 stem bunches.
Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or
FloraLife to the vase that contains
your Bird of Paradise with each water change. Floral
preservative helps to prevent bacteria growth and feeds your flowers insuring a longer vase life. To make your own
cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table sugar to a quart of cold
water... mixing thoroughly.
