Cut Flower Care: Keep the water in the vase of your Asiatic
Lily fresh. Replace the water every 3 days with cold water keeping the water level near the top of the vase. Re-cut
1/2" from the base of each stem under water using a
sharp knife with each water change. Remove any foliage
that may become submerged after re-cutting to avoid bacterial
growth.
Variety note: When
selecting Asiatic Lilies look for straight stems that have tight buds, or buds
that are cracked and showing a little color. The foliage should be
dark green, glossy and unspotted. Asiatic Lilies are long bunches usually
measuring 32" to 36" in length. Good quality Asiatic
Lilies will have a minimum of 3 to 4 buds per stem. As each flower
opens the pollen sacks should be removed from the stamens to prevent pollen
staining of the flower. Asiatic Lilies are sold in 10 stem bunches in a wide
assortment of solid and bi-colors.
Lily fans have a well known Asiatic and Oriental Lily grower
located right here in Arvada, Colorado. They grow thousands of
bunches of beautiful Lilies a year. Our Floral Sponsor buys these
Colorado grown lilies and has them available in her shop.
Several
varieties of Asiatic lily hybrids are winter hardy here in
Colorado. In the early spring your local Garden Center should have
Asiatic Lily bulbs available for planting in containers or beds.
Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or
FloraLife to the vase that contains your "Asiatic Lily"
with each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent
bacteria growth and feeds your Lily flowers insuring a longer vase
life. To make your own cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table
sugar to a quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
