Cut Flower Care: Keep the water in the vase of your
"Amaranthus" fresh. Replace the water every 3 days with
cold water keeping the water level near the top of the vase.
Re-cut 1/2" from the base of each stem under water using
a sharp knife with each water change. Remove any foliage
that may become submerged after re-cutting to avoid bacteria
growth.
Variety note: Amaranthus
is available nearly year round with occasional breaks in supply.
Amaranthus is offered in upright and hanging forms in green (Viridis),
red, and bronze. Bunches are usually quite long measuring
24" to 36" or more in length. The inflorescence on
hanging Amaranthus weeps downward. The soft velvety foxtail like
flowers of hanging Amaranthus can measure up to 12" long.
Upright Amaranthus has ridged flowers that remain upright. I've
only seen upright Amaranthus in bronze, and reddish-purple.
Common
names for Amaranthus include; Love Lies Bleeding, Tassel Flower,
or Velvet Flower.
Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or
FloraLife to the vase that contains your upright or hanging "Amaranthus" with
each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent bacteria
growth... and feeds your flowers insuring a longer vase life. To
make your own cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table sugar to a
quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
