General Cut Flower Care: Keep the water in the vase of your Giant Allium fresh. Replace the water every 3 days with cold water keeping the water level near the top of the vase. Re-cut 1/2" from the base of each stem under water using a sharp knife with each water change. Remove any foliage that may become submerged after re-cutting to avoid bacteria growth.

Variety note: There are several types of Allium commonly used in the floral trade. Drumstick and Giant Allium are probably the most common. Giant Allium is available during late spring to early summer. Large headed Alliums are usually sold by the stem. The stems are long and thick measuring 36" or more. Flower heads are also large creating a perfect ball up to 5" round. Giant Allium is only available in light purple. Large Allium varieties like the pictured Allium, have an onion like fragrance.

There are numerous varieties of Allium that are winter hardy in Colorado making them suitable for the perennial garden.

Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or FloraLife to the vase that contains your Giant Allium with each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent bacteria growth... and feeds your flowers insuring a longer vase life. To make your own cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table sugar to a quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
